This programme prepares registered nurses with advanced nursing knowledge and evidence-based clinical skills in renal nursing to provide competent and high quality nursing care patients requiring complex renal nursing care.

Owing to the steady increase in the number of renal cases in Hong Kong, there is a need in renal dialysis nursing services and professional training in renal nursing.

The Postgraduate Diploma programme aims to prepare experienced registered nurses for an advanced practice role in renal nursing and a research role in health care. With a focus on advanced nursing care for patients receiving renal dialysis, renal transplantation, and up-to-date management of patients with acute and chronic renal failure and associated conditions, students will learn advanced knowledge and apply professional renal nursing care on renal patients requiring hospitalisation and home care.

The programme also enhances the research knowledge of the students and prepares them for roles of evidence-based practice.

The programme comprises 2 modules:

Module 1: Advanced Specialisation in Renal Nursing

Module 2: Methods in Healthcare Research

1.        Upon completion of Module 1, student may exit with the Postgraduate Certificate in Advanced Nursing Practice (Renal Nursing). OR

2.        Student can proceed to enroll in Module 2

Upon completion of Modules 1 and 2, a Postgraduate Diploma will be awarded within the HKU system through HKU SPACE.

Module 1: Advanced Specialization in Renal Nursing

 
Module Objectives

On completion of the module, the students should be able to:

  1. Apply advanced nursing knowledge and skills in nephrology practice;
  2. Establish specific nursing care for patients with renal disorders in collaboration with multidisciplinary healthcare team members;
  3. Critically analyze the outcomes of different treatment and management in renal dialysis unit; and
  4. Discuss the essential elements on application of evidence based practice in renal nursing.

  5. Simulated skill practice

Students will spend a total of 20 hours to complete the assigned clinical exercise.  They are expected to apply specialized knowledge and skills in providing comprehensive renal nursing care to patients in various clinical setting.

Lectures, tutorials, group discussions, and simulated skill practice.

  1. 70% attendance of the theoretical component and full attendance of the practical component
  2. Written examination

Students MUST PASS ALL the required assessments. Individual student is responsible for completing the assigned clinical project.

Module 2: Methods in Healthcare Research

Module Objectives

On completion of the module, the students should be able to:

  1. Critically review the importance of quantitative research methods in renal nursing;
  2. Examine approaches, outcomes and values of qualitative designs in renal nursing;
  3. Analyze basic concepts of quantitative statistics; and
  4. Discuss the essential elements on application of evidence based practice in renal nursing.

  1. Identifying and refining research questions
  2. Matching research questions to appropriate research methods
  3. Strategies for conducting a review of literature
  4. Implementing research findings to practice
  5. Basic elements in quantitative research
  6. Common approaches in quantitative research in healthcare
  7. Experimental design, quasi-experimental design, epidemiology, basic statistics;
  8. Basic elements in qualitative research
  9. Common approaches in qualitative research in healthcare: grounded theory phenomenology
  10. Action research.

Critique of an article and a review of literature

Award
  1. Upon successful completion of Module 1 of the programme, students will be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Advanced Nursing Practice (Renal Nursing).
  2. Upon successful completion of Modules 1 and 2, students will be awarded the Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Nursing Practice (Renal Nursing) within the HKU system through HKU SPACE.

 

Applicants shall:

  1. be Registered Nurses (General) registered with the Nursing Council of Hong Kong; and
  2. have completed the Professional Certificate/Certificate in Renal Nursing awarded within the HKU system through HKU SPACE or an equivalent qualification; and
  3. hold a bachelor's degree awarded by a recognised university.
